Hey there, and welcome back. I’m Dr. Reed with Living Wellness Chiropractic here in Columbia, Maryland — and today we’re talking about something I am really passionate about. We’re diving into chiropractic care for athletes and active adults. Whether you’re a weekend warrior, a serious competitor, or just someone who loves to stay active — this one is for you.
So here’s the thing. A lot of people think chiropractic care is only for when you’re hurting. Like, you threw your back out, you can barely move, and now you’re coming to see me. And yes — we absolutely help with that. But what I really want people to understand is that chiropractic care is just as powerful as a performance tool. As something you do to keep your body working at its best — before problems even start.
Think about it this way. Your spine is the central highway of your nervous system. Every signal your brain sends to your muscles, your joints, your organs — it travels through that highway. When there’s interference in that system — when joints aren’t moving the way they should, when there’s tension or restriction — your body just doesn’t perform the way it’s capable of. You might feel tightness. Your reaction time might be a little slower. Recovery might take longer than it used to. These are signs your body is asking for some attention.
Now, let me talk about some of the most common things I see with active adults. Number one — and this is a big one — hip and lower back issues. So many athletes and active people deal with tightness and pain in the lower back and hips. A lot of the time, it comes down to imbalances. One side pulling harder than the other. Joints that have lost their normal range of motion. When we restore that motion and address those imbalances, people are often amazed at how much better they feel — and how much better they move.
Number two is shoulder and neck tension. If you’re a swimmer, a cyclist, a golfer, a weightlifter — your neck and shoulders are taking a lot of load. Over time, that can create restriction and discomfort that affects not just how you feel, but how well you can perform. Chiropractic adjustments, combined with soft tissue work, can make a real difference there.
And number three — recovery. This is where I think chiropractic care is criminally underrated. When your spine and joints are moving well, your body can heal and recover more efficiently. You’re not fighting against your own restrictions. That means less soreness, faster bounce-back, and more time doing what you love.
So what can you do right now? First — pay attention to asymmetry. If one side of your body feels tighter, weaker, or less mobile than the other — that’s worth paying attention to. Second — don’t wait for pain to take care of yourself. Hydrate well, warm up before activity, and give your body time to recover. And third — consider getting a movement evaluation. Understanding how your body is actually moving can help you get ahead of problems before they become injuries.
If you’re active and you’ve never had a chiropractic evaluation — or it’s been a while — I really encourage you to come in. We’ll take a close look at how you’re moving, where restrictions might be showing up, and put together a plan that fits your lifestyle and your goals. Whether you’re training for a race, playing recreational sports, or just want to keep moving well into your later years — we are here to help you do that.
