Hey there, and welcome back. I’m Doctor Reed, and you’re listening to the Living Wellness Chiropractic podcast, coming to you from right here in Columbia, Maryland. Today we’re talking about something I genuinely get excited about — daily mobility exercises. And I want to share why adding just a few simple movements to your morning routine can make a massive difference in how you feel, move, and live.

Now, here’s the thing. A lot of people come into the office and say, “Doctor Reed, I just feel stiff. I feel older than I actually am.” And I get it. We’re sitting more than ever. We’re at desks, we’re in cars, we’re on couches. And over time, that stillness kind of creeps into our bodies. Our joints get tight, our muscles shorten, and suddenly — bending down to tie your shoes feels like a whole project.

But here’s the good news. You don’t have to just accept that. Mobility is something you can work on, starting today, without any special equipment, without a gym membership, and without spending hours on it.

Let me break this down for you. Mobility isn’t the same as flexibility. Flexibility is about how far a muscle can stretch. Mobility is about how well your joints move through their full range of motion — with control. And that distinction matters a lot. A joint that moves well is a joint that’s healthier, less painful, and far less prone to injury. That’s what we’re going for.

So what are some movements that actually help? Let’s start with the hips. Your hips are the foundation of almost everything your body does. When they get tight — and they will, from all that sitting — it puts stress on your lower back, your knees, even your ankles. One of the simplest things you can do is a slow hip circle. Stand, hands on your hips, and gently rotate them in a big, smooth circle. Ten times one way, ten times the other. That’s it. Sounds simple, right? It is. But do it every morning and you’ll feel the difference within a week or two.

Now let’s talk about the thoracic spine — that’s the mid back. This area is one of the most commonly neglected parts of the body, and when it gets stiff, it affects your posture, your shoulder movement, and even your breathing. A really great movement for this is a seated or standing rotation. Sit up tall, cross your arms over your chest, and gently rotate left and right — slowly, under control. You’re not yanking or forcing it. Just coaxing that movement back in. Do that for about thirty seconds each direction.

And finally — the neck. So many people carry tension in their neck and shoulders without even realizing it. A gentle neck half circle — dropping your chin to your chest and slowly rolling from one side to the other — can do wonders. Skip the full backward roll. Just front to side to side. Nice and slow.

Here’s what’s interesting. When you do these movements consistently, you’re not just warming up your muscles. You’re actually feeding your joints. Joints don’t have a direct blood supply the same way muscles do — they rely on movement to circulate nutrients and remove waste. So when you move regularly, you’re keeping those joints healthier over time. It’s one of those things where motion truly is lotion.

Now, practical advice — when should you do these? Morning is ideal. Before your body has a chance to settle into its usual patterns, run through these three movements. Hips, mid back, neck. The whole thing takes maybe five minutes. Set a reminder on your phone if you need to. Make it a non-negotiable part of your day like brushing your teeth.

And if you’re doing these movements and noticing pain, pinching, or something just doesn’t feel right — that’s your body asking for a closer look. That’s when it’s time to come see us. Sometimes there’s an underlying issue with joint alignment or muscle imbalance that needs professional attention before you can really get the most out of your mobility work.
