Hey there, welcome back to the Living Wellness Chiropractic podcast. I’m so glad you’re here today because we’re diving into something that affects almost every single person who walks through our doors… and that’s sleep. Or really, the lack of it.
You know what I hear constantly? People saying they’re tired all the time, they toss and turn all night, or they wake up feeling like they never slept at all. And here’s the thing… poor sleep doesn’t just make you tired. It affects your pain levels, your mood, your ability to heal, everything.
So today, let’s talk about sleep hygiene. Now, that’s not about taking a shower before bed… though that can help. Sleep hygiene is really about all the habits and environmental factors that set you up for quality rest.
Let me start with the big one… your sleep schedule. Your body has this incredible internal clock, and it craves consistency. Try to go to bed and wake up at the same time every day. Yes, even on weekends. I know, I know… but trust me on this. When you keep a regular schedule, your body learns when to release sleep hormones and when to wake you up naturally. It’s like training your system.
Now let’s talk about your bedroom environment. Your room should be cool, dark, and quiet. I usually tell patients to aim for somewhere between sixty-five and sixty-eight degrees. And I mean really dark… like cave dark. Those little lights from your phone charger or alarm clock? Cover them up. Consider blackout curtains if you have streetlights outside. Your brain is incredibly sensitive to light, and even small amounts can mess with your melatonin production.
Here’s another big one… screens before bed. I get it, scrolling through your phone is relaxing, right? Actually, no. That blue light from your devices tricks your brain into thinking it’s daytime. Try to power down all screens at least thirty to sixty minutes before you want to fall asleep. Read a book instead, do some gentle stretching, or just have a conversation with your partner.
And speaking of what you do before bed… let’s talk about that wind-down routine. Your body needs a transition period between go-go-go mode and sleep mode. Create a relaxing ritual. Maybe it’s a warm shower, some light stretching, or a few minutes of deep breathing. This signals to your nervous system that it’s time to shift gears.
Here’s something people don’t think about enough… your mattress and pillow. If your neck or back hurts when you wake up, we need to talk. Your sleep position matters, and so does your support. Most people need a new mattress every seven to ten years, and pillows should be replaced even more often.
One more thing… watch what you consume in the evening. Caffeine can stay in your system for six to eight hours, so that afternoon coffee might be sabotaging your sleep. And alcohol? Sure, it might help you fall asleep, but it really disrupts your deep sleep cycles later in the night.
Now, here’s where chiropractic care fits in. When your spine is misaligned, it can create tension that keeps your nervous system in overdrive. Many of our patients report sleeping better after we get their alignment corrected and their nervous system calmed down. If you’re doing all these sleep hygiene practices and still struggling, it might be time to get checked.
Start with just one or two of these tips tonight. Pick the easiest ones first. Maybe it’s setting a bedtime alarm or turning your room temperature down a few degrees. Small changes add up.
